This is the toughest part of the season for personnel evaluators— the cuts are looming.
I need to keep this blurger short due to ongoing investigations by Livefyre of a foreign terrorist in our midst. Okay, that's over the top—a little— but I am personally bummed out that I have to police our own fan correspondents for antisocial behavior bordering on the ridiculous.
So this is all I've got today—
Brandon Boykin is being considered more at nickel corner than on the outside, although DC Bill Davis didn’t rule him out of the starting outside cornerback jobs held by Cary Williams and Bradley Fletcher.
“We truly want to see [Boykin] at the nickel spot,” Davis said. “In this day and age and the way the NFL is right now, your inside back plays more than some of your [outside corners]. There are more three-wide receiver sets. … That nickel is just like a starting corner. It’s not like you lost out on the starting corner and now you’re playing nickel.
“That is a huge job that gets a lot of attention, and a unique skillset.”
Boykin was the Eagles’ nickel cornerback last season, but head coach Chip Kelly has given him chances on the outside, too. Davis, however, said Fletcher has impressed him with his steady play. He was signed as a free agent after spending the past four seasons with St. Louis.
“It’s not flashy,” Davis said about Fletcher. “He’s been very consistent is the best way to put it, a real pro.”
And then there's the RG situation…
Allen Barbre, the free agent signed by the Eagles after he sat out all of last season, was still with the first team at right guard yesterday ahead of Danny Watkins, the Eagles’ first-round draft choice in 2011. Barbre was filling in for Todd Herremans, who missed his second practice in a row with a knee injury.
That could either be a troubling sign for Watkins or just Watkins' trying to work himself back into shape after missing a week of practice with a concussion. Watkins returned to practice Tuesday.
“Barbre has been a pleasant surprise throughout this whole process,” center Jason Kelce said. “He really fit in well with the group. … He has grasped the offense from day one. He’s been a really good get for us this offseason.”
Cary (Williams) on…
