All Bulldogs, All the time

Here’s a couple of great Butler articles.

Get to know the team, player by player

Kravitz talks about a special inspiration

Matt White’s address to the team was winding down. Shartrina’s strong voice never wavered. For those who care for victims of ALS, there is a special place in heaven.

“You have tremendous resolve to survive, to keep moving on, regardless of the obstacles you face,” she said, reading Matt’s letter. “You also live in the moment, never looking back or looking too far forward, you deal with only what is in front of you and you move on . . . You are a tremendously courageous group of men.”

She paused.

“Thank you for inviting me to address you today,” she said. “I count this opportunity as one of my greatest honors, and I hope you have gotten even a fraction of the benefit that I have gotten from being here.”

The players applauded, then approached the Whites, one coach and player after another. Nored stopped and told them, “I’ll always remember this. Thank you for inspiring me. You inspire all of us.”

As Butler’s personnel walked off the court, Matt somehow signaled to his wife, using a kind of communication only ALS victims and caregivers understand. He wanted to ask me a question.

Shartrina prompted Matt with letters, and Matt raised his eyebrows each time she hit on the right letter. It is a long, painstaking process, one I can recall during my mother’s fight with the disease.

“How — do — you — like — our — chances?”

I smiled.

“I like them. A lot.”

Matt made a noise, raised his eyebrows.

Yes.
