Drew Brees is about as high profile as it will ever get as a sports superstar in New Orleans, but the Hornets drafting Anthony Davis at the very least suggests there’s potential for another sheriff in town. As high profile as Chris Paul was, Anthony Davis has a chance to be even bigger. Some call the NBA’s 1st overall pick the best defensive prospect in over a decade. The fortune New Orleans has had with landing both young and established athletic talent in the last 5-10 years has been outlandish when you consider the small market climate of the city and the odds of actually landing those players. It’s incredibly unlikely that it would play out this way, and it’s pretty cool think about the billboards we’ll see going up of both Davis and Brees around the city. It’s just been a fantastic decade to be a New Orleans sports fan.
For now the Saints are the most likely of the two franchises to win a title, but it’s entirely possible that 2-3 years from now, as Drew Brees gets older, the Hornets will be the more likely team between the two on the brink of history. Not only is Anthony Davis (“Unibrow”) the obvious cornerstone to build your entire team around, at only 19 years of age mind you, but the Hornets have already surrounded him by Eric Gordon (one of the best shooting guards in the NBA) and two more rookies in Austin Rivers and Darius Miller to round out a very solid rookie class. Pretty crazy that Tom Benson now owns both of these franchises. He really couldn’t have come at a better time.
That’s all you can ask for as a sports fan: a shot at a title. You hope for a competitive team that has at least the potential either now or down the road of making a run. The Saints are there now, and the Hornets were there a few years ago, and their recent pickups suggest they may only be 2-3 years away from possibly being a serious contender.
