Worst Mascots In Baseball

Just about every team in baseball has a mascot of some sort to interact with the fans during the games. While some of them are beloved, others can be mocked. Here’s a look at five considered to be the worst.

Homer The Brave

When the Atlanta Braves decided that they needed to be a little bit more politically correct, they ditched a Native American mascot in honor of the guy who looks like a poor man’s version of Mr. Met. His interaction with fans and on the Internet doesn’t help him any either. Overall, this is a lazy effort from Atlanta in general.

Rangers Captain

Many people think that the Texas Rangers could do a little bit better than having a horse as a mascot. He doesn’t seem all that intimidating, and it has gotten a little stale since being introduced in 2002.

Gapper

The Cincinnati Reds have too many mascots, even if they are not all official. One mascot that is official is Gapper, but he’s basically a slightly-altered version of the Philly Phanatic. It is pretty bad when you don’t even finish in the top 3 for your team in a fan voting for best mascot.

Southpaw

One of the most polarizing mascots, Southpaw is a bit of an unknown even to diehard White Sox fans. No one really knows what he actually is, and the story on the name is a bit fuzzy as well. With so many unknowns, it is hard to get behind him 100%. Being a Southpaw, he should at least bring some value to any fantasy baseball squad out there in mascot leagues.

Dinger

The Colorado Rockies had to get creative when thinking of a mascot. After all, they couldn’t exactly dress somebody up as a mountain. When dinosaur fossils were discovered during construction of Coors Field, the idea for Dinger came about. While a dinosaur mascot is nice, Dinger comes off a little weird. Maybe a redesign is in order.
