Tim Wakefield was on his 5th try to get his 200th career win. As with his last 5 tries, he would have to wait for another day. Wakefield pitched well into the 6th inning and then everything started to go wrong.
The Sox gave Wake a 1-0 lead in the 3rd when Ryan Lavarnway scored from third base when Scoot hit into a double play. Wake gave up a game tying run in the bottom of the 3rd with a Butler RBI double. Wake got the lead right back when the Sox scored two runs in the 4th.
Everything was going swimmingly until the Sox hit the 6th inning. Lavarnway scored another run for the 6th in the top of the 6th with an RBI single. Wake took the mound with a 4-1 lead. Wake gave up a run on a Franceour single and then another run on a Moustakas double. Matt Albers came out in relief of Wakefield and things went from bad to worse. Albers gave up the game tying run to take away Wake’s chance at a win with an RBI a single to Getz. Albers gave up 3 more runs before he was pulled and Franklin Morales took the mound. It didn’t end there. Morales gave up 2 runs and suddenly the Sox are down 4-9. The Sox allowed 8 runs to score in the inning.
And that’s all she wrote. Wake had the shot at the win, but it once again was not to be done. Five days from now, we’ll try it all again.
