Red Sox fans can be very loyal to a player that is struggling and they can also be very brutal to a guy that is not doing that bad. Most Sox fans loved Nick Green last season even though he only hit .236, but J.D. Drew did not get respect when his numbers were good. How will Red Sox fans treat Mike Cameron? The guy has power and could win over fans with a walk-off homer early in his Red Sox career, but what if he struggles out of the gate? Cameron is going to strike out a lot:
In April, Cameron is likely to move past Dave Kingman into 10th place on the all-time strikeout list. He’s already fanned more than any player with fewer than 300 home runs. At some point in 2011, he’ll become just the fifth hitter with 2,000 strikeout
If those stikeout are rally killers in the first few weeks of the season Cameron may start to hear it from fans. You don’t want to put too much pressure on Cameron, but he needs to start strong. Remember how quickly fans gave up on Coco. It may not be right, but it is the reality when playing for the Red Sox.
