Who should the Blues use during 3-on-3 overtime?

Ever since the NHL revealed they’d be adopting 3-on-3 overtime beginning in 2015-16, Blues fans have been quick to predict which trio the club should use for the new format. There are some obvious choices – Vladimir Tarasenko for starters – but below is an educated guess at what the Blues might do in various situation.

Vladimir Tarasenko – Jaden Schwartz – Alex Pietrangelo (or Kevin Shattenkirk)

Defensively, it’s safe to assume the Blues will exclusively use either Alex Pietrangelo or Kevin Shattenkirk. Regardless of the situation or the two forwards on the ice, there’s no logical reason to not use either defenseman.

As for forwards, it all comes down to chemistry. Tarasenko and Schwartz have already proven that they work well together and are arguably the team’s most talented skaters. They’re likely the top option when it comes to the new format.

Beyond Tarasenko and Schwartz, where does the team look? If there is a draw deep in the Blues’ end, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Paul Stastny or David Backes out on the ice. Alexander Steen is another choice if the Blues see an opportunity for speed. Beyond these five, there may be some fringe opportunities for Jori Lehtera, but an educated guess says the Blues could – and maybe should – roll with a rotation of Tarasenko, Schwartz, Backes, Steen and Stastny.
