The Red Sox officially announced this afternoon that they have hired former catcher and captain Jason Varitek as Special Assistant to the General Manager. Tek will be working for the front office in an off the field capacity. The Red Sox announced through its twitter account that Varitek will be involved in Major League personnel decisions, evaluations and mentorship and instruction of young players.
I’m excited to have Tek back with the Red Sox in any way possible. I still hope to see him in a coaching capacity down the road, but this kind of position seems perfectly appropriate at this time.
