The Red Sox went through the process of either tendering or non tendering players yesterday. All in all there were not many surprises. The Sox tendered contracts to Aceves, Bard, Morales, Aviles, Ellsbury, Lowrie and Saltalamacchia.
The only player non tendered was Rich Hill, a lefty reliever. Now I know usually lefty relievers are considered to be gold and held onto, however Hill had Tommy John surgery last year and it probably didn’t make much sense for the Sox to use up a 40 man roster spot on him since he wouldn’t be ready to pitch until the 2nd half of the season, if that. So Hill is now a free agent and can look to see if another team wants to offer him a major league deal. There is a still a small chance he ends up with a minor league deal with the Sox. As a fan of all things Rich Hill, I hope that happens. He pitched lights out last year until he got hurt and needed Tommy John.
