It has been reported, but not confirmed today that Jason Varitek has been offered a minor league contract by the Red Sox. He will be invited to camp at Spring Training in a non-roster spot role, if he so chooses to accept. Tek would then have to compete with the other Sox catchers (Salty, Lavarnway and Shoppach) for the chance for a roster spot with the team. Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com tweeted that Tek will weigh the offer vs. retirement.
Scott Lauber from the Boston Herald tweeted that an offer of a position within the Red Sox organization (I can only assume that would be in the minor leagues) would be definite if Tek chooses to retire.
Given all of that, it could also just be all rumors since the Globe has reported that they contacted Ben Cherington and he said that the Sox have made no formal offer of any kind to Jason Varitek.
My opinion, I hope that Tek retires and is able to stay with the organization in some kind of role or position. I just can’t imagine him in a minor league role with the team, nor do I think it would be a good for the team. I can’t see having the Captain playing games in Pawtucket. I also think it would be an understatement to say that group dynamic would not be ideal. The starting pitchers are very loyal to Tek and that just seems like drama waiting to happen. I think that if Tek is not going to be on the club, then he and the Sox need to move on and part ways.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens and what Tek decides. I’d love for him to retire, have a Tek Appreciation Day…and trust me, I’ll be there on that day and screaming, cheering and crying for all that Tek has meant to the team.
