This evening I can declare total victory in raising my son to be a Red Sox fan. Shortly before he was born my wife suggested the middle name of “Fenway” for our first born child. Everyone who learned about the name early on either loved it or said, “What if he turns out to be a Yankee fan, or someone who doesn’t like baseball?” The thought of him not liking the Red Sox or even worse, not liking baseball had never crossed my mind so for the last few years I lived in a state of semi-panic (Sox fans are always in a state of semi-panic).
Once T-ball started last year he really started to like baseball though he was disappointed to be on the Pirates and not the Red Sox. I tried not to push him to into liking something he really didn’t want to and my hands-off approach has worked.
This Saturday morning he woke up and immediately asked if we could watch one of the “Greatest Games of Fenway Park” DVD’s. This morning he proudly put on a Red Sox shirt and grabbed his Red Sox lunch box for school. When he came home from school today he opened his backpack and proudly displayed the book he had checked out from the library: No Easy Way: The Story of Ted Williams and the last .400 season.
In 6 short years I have created a monster who may become a bigger Sox fan than I am. Not bad for a kid who lives 3,147 miles from Fenway Park.
