The Red Sox had the ability to hit two birds with one stone tonight….finally getting to .500 and getting a sweep of the Yankees. We had one of our aces, Jon Lester on the mound so our chances were good. Lester struggled a little out of the gate. He gave up a run in the 1st inning and then gave up 3 more runs in the 2nd. At the end of 2, it was looking pretty grim being down 4-1. It looked like it could be one of those rough outings for Lester.
However, Youkilis had Lester’s back and hit a 3 run HR in the 3rd to tie the game 4-4. Lester settled down and didn’t allow any runs to score. The Sox got another run on the board in 5th with a David Ortiz BROKEN BAT HR to give Jon Lester the lead. Pedey would also score on an ARod error in the 7th in order to give the Sox a 6-4 lead. Alfredo Aceves took the mound from Jon Lester. He pitched well, unfortunately he walked Granderson and he was allowed to score on an error from Carl Crawford. It was the inning of the RBI errors!
And then the Sox were able to add on another insurance run with the FIRST HOME RUN from Jarrod Saltalamacchia. It was nice to see him get a ball out of the park and the smile on his face after he did it. Hopefully this sparks his bat to continue to get hits and be productive.
Bard pitched 1.1 innings. He didn’t allow any runs to score, but he sure raised our blood pressure a little bit. He walked Jorge Posada to start the 8th, but then recorded the 3 outs he needed. Papelbon came out in the 9th and had an easy 1-2-3 inning.
SWEEP!!! The Red Sox win and we’re FINALLY AT .500 BASEBALL!!
