Andrew Miller had his first MLB start with the Red Sox last night and Adrian Gonzalez was facing his former team for the first time. Miller took the mound and he wasn’t lights out spectacular, but he was pretty gosh darn decent. His reputation was for having real command issues and we didn’t see that much at all last night. He pitched with a lot of composure and confidence. He issued a leadoff triple in the 4th and that got the next three outs not to allow Guzman to score. In the 6th, it seemed like Miller hit a wall. Suddenly, he was getting hit around and then gave up a 3 run HR to Orlando Hudson to tie the game. After that he gave up a very long “almost homer” double to Anthony Rizzo (welcome back kiddo!) and that sent Miller from the game. So, it wasn’t a spectacular performance, but it definitely was a decent debut. Matt Albers came out and pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.

And then the 7th inning happened. The Red Sox sent 14 batters to the plate in the inning. You heard me. FOURTEEN. The Sox scored 10 runs in that inning. Gonzo got two RBI hits in the inning alone to remind the Padres just what a special guy they were missing. Two runs were scored with the bases loaded and the Padres pitcher hitting our batters. We also scored another run on a bases loaded walk. The Sox had 9 batters reach in the 7th when they had two outs. To say it was an offensive barrage is an understatement. Both Bowden and Hottovy gave up a run in the 8th and 9th inning, but well…it didn’t matter much.
Great game. Let’s do it again tomorrow.
Red Sox 14 Padres 5 BOXSCORE
