The Red Sox had a day game against the Giants before heading on to LA. The Sox would need a win to take the series and they had Felix Doubront on the mound vs. Barry Zito. Zito struggled out of the gate and often to give the Sox the lead and Doubront pitched a great outing.
The Sox scored for the first time in the 2nd inning when Will Middlebrooks hit a 2 run homer. Doubront gave up a solo HR to Arias in the bottom of the inning, but that would be the only run that he would give up in his outing. In the 3rd the Sox jumped out to a 5-1 lead when Pedey hit an RBI double and then Gomes hit a 2 run RBI single. The Sox grabbed another run from Zito in the 4th when Victorino hit an RBI double to score Middlebrooks. Zito was done for the night, but the Sox were not done scoring.
The Sox totally opened up this game in the 7th when Salty hit a 2 RBI single and then Stephen Drew hit a 3 run homerun. Sox 11-1. In the 8th Xander Bogaerts was in the game and didn't get a hit, but reached on a groundout and then Nava scored on a throwing error. Sox 12-1. All at the same time, Felix Doubront just kept on pitching scoreless inning after scoreless inning. The past two starts Felix has not made it through the 5th inning, but this outing he pitched 8 strong innings. Doubront's pitching line for the night was 114 pitches, 8 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 BB and 3 Ks. You can't ask for better than that. Uehara came out to pitch the 9th since it has been 5 days since the last time he worked in a game. Koji had a 1-2-3 inning and the Sox won the game and the series.
The Rays lost last night, so the Sox once again are in sole possession of first place.
Red Sox 12 Giants 1 BOXSCORE
WP: Doubront (9-6) LP: Zito (4-9)
