Sox Lose Series Opener to Yanks

It was a rematch of Lackey vs. CC and we all hoped Lackey could walk away with another win against the Yankees ace.  Unfortunately, that would not be the case.  Sabathia was able to get a win against the Red Sox for the first time this year and the Yankees were able to win their 3rd game against the Sox this season.

Lackey started out on fire with a 7 pitch 1-2-3 first inning.  In the 2nd, Lackey walked Granderson, gave up a hit to Swisher and then gave up an RBI hit to Chavez.  He got out of the inning without any more damage thanks to Posada grounding into a double play.   In the bottom of the 2nd, the Sox had the bases loaded but Ellsbury ground out with 2 outs and they weren’t able to get anything across the plate.  In the 4th, Lackey gave up 2 more runs to have the Yankees leading 3-0.  Lackey gave up an RBI double to Robbie Cano and then an RBI single to Eric Chavez.  Once again, Lackey got out of trouble when he got Posada to ground into a double play.

In the bottom of the 4th, the Red Sox bats woke up…a tad.  Carl Crawford hit a solo HR.  It is his 10th HR of the season for Crawford.  Salty and DMac both got singles off Sabathia and then Scutaro hit an RBI double to score Salty.  The Sox were climbing back and just trailing 2-3.

In the top of the 5th, Lackey gave one run right back when he gave up a solo HR to Francisco Cervell.  There was also a wee bit of drama there as Cervelli celebrated at home plate by clapping his hands in front of Salty’s face.  Cervelli came to the plate again in the 7th and was hit by a pitch.  Lackey said after the game that it wasn’t intentional.  Yeah, sure it wasn’t.  Cervelli started barking and Salty stayed between him and Lackey.  The benches cleared in the most undramatic way ever.  The players just basically came out and looked at one another.  Cervelli ended up moving to second on a passed ball and then to 3rd on a Gardner bunt single.  Cervelli ended up scoring and the Sox were not trailing 2-5.

In the bottom of the 7th, the Sox should have scored a run on a Crawford single, but Papi read the ball wrong and stopped at 3rd base instead of going home.  I know Papi is slow and all, but anyone and everyone could have scored on that play.  It was another missed opportunity for the Sox.
Soriano and Rivera finished out the game for the Yankees and the loss was in the books.  Papi did get a nice leadoff double against Mo to remind him that he can hit him pretty hard from time to time, but it was all for not.  Lowrie was called out on strikes even though none of the pitched Mo threw to him were strikes.  Salty was hit by a pitch and no I don’t think it was intentional.  Joe Girardi ended up getting ejected when he came out to complain that Salty swung and therefore it was not a HBP.   The game ended when Reddick came in to pinch hit and popped out for the 3rd out.

We didn’t win the game, however we still made CC Sabathia work harder than he has to do against any other team.  Sabathia gave up 10 hits, unfortunately just 2 runs.  We had SIXTEEN men left on base, so we had opportunities…we just could not capitalize on them.
