Sox Get Pummeled by Mariners in Series Opener

The Red Sox headed into Seattle and had a tall order ahead of them, facing Felix Hernandez in the series opener.  The Sox had John Lackey on the mound and while he looked decent through 3 innings everything fell apart in the 4th and the game might as well have been over at that point.  The Sox continue their season of struggle.

The Red Sox were able to strike the scoreboard first when they got a solo run off King Felix in the 1st inning.  Pedey got a single and moved to 2nd on a throwing error and then Papi hit him home by way of an RBI single.  Sox 1-0.  Lackey gave that run back in the 2nd when Logan Morrison hit a no doubt solo HR.  Sox 1-1.  The Sox pulled ahead again in the top of the 4th when Napoli hit a solo HR of his own.  Sox 2-1.  That would be the last time the Sox had a lead in this game.  Everything and I mean everything fell apart for Lackey in the bottom of the 4th.  Lackey gave up a single to Seager to tie the game 2-2.  The Mariners took the lead when Ackley hit an RBI grounder to score Seager from 3rd base.  The Mariners went up 4-2 when LoMo scored by way of a wild pitch.  Sox 2-4.  Lackey then gave up a walk and a single before giving up a bases clearing triple to Chavez to the Mariners up 7-2.  It was brutal and Farrell had seen enough, so Lackey was done for the night.  Chris Capuano came into the game and got a groundout to end the inning.

In the 5th Capuano would give up a run of his own when he allowed an RBI single to Morrison.  Sox 2-8.  Capuano pitched a scoreless 6th and found some trouble again in the 7th.  Capuano gave up an RBI single to Cano, an RBI single to Seager and then a 2 run HR to Morrison.  Morrison had a great night at the plate with his 2nd homerun of the night.  Sox 2-12.  Capuano was done and Craig Breslow was into the game to finish off the inning.  Breslow got the outs he needed to end the 7th and also pitched a scoreless 8th inning.  The Sox were able to add a run in the 9th inning when Pierzynski hit an RBI sac fly to score Ortiz but it is an understatement that it was way too little, way too late.
