Sox Finally Get in the Win Column vs the Royals

The Red Sox dropped the first two games of the series with the Royals and if they had any chance to split the series they would need to get a win last night.   The Sox had Felix Doubront on the mound vs. Jeremy Guthrie for the Royals.  Doubront would struggle in the 5th and end up not making it out of the inning, but the Sox were able to lean on the bullpen and get a much needed win.

The game stayed tied 0-0 until the 4th inning when the Sox bats got to Jeremy Gurthrie and cracked the scoreboard.  Stephen Drew continued to be hot at the plate and got the first Sox run when he hit an RBI double to score Carp.  Will Middlebrooks was back in the lineup and was welcomed back with a 2 run RBI single.  The final run of the inning was scored when Ellsbury hit an RBI single to score Middlebrooks.  Sox 4-0.  Even with a 4-0 lead, Doubront found himself in trouble in the 5th inning.  Doubront just couldn't get an out.  He issued a walk, RBI doubles to Hosmer and Butler and then a single to Gordon.  Farrell came out to get him and Brandon Workman was in the game.  Workman gave up an RBI single to Tejada, but that he also struck out 2 batters and was able to have the Sox still leading when the inning was over. Sox 4-3.

In the 6th the Sox were able to get one of those runs right back when Ellsbury hit an RBI double to score Middlebrooks.  Sox 5-3.  Ellsbury had himself quite a night at the plate going 4 for 5 with 2 RBIs.  Workman came out in the bottom of the 6th and got one out, but when he gave up a single Craig Breslow came into the game.  Breslow got a double play ball and got out of the inning.  Tazawa pitched scoreles 7th and 8th innings before handing the ball over to the closer Koji Uehara.  Uehara continued to dazzle with a 1-2-3 inning through the heart of the Royals' order.

The Rays lost yesterday, so the Sox were able to extend to a 3 game lead in the AL East.

Red Sox 5  Royals 3  BOXSCORE
