Sox Beat Kluber to Take Win From Indians!

The Red Sox had to face off with Corey Kluber last night.   The Sox had Drew Pomeranz on the mound who left his last game early with back spasms.   Pomeranz showed he is healthy and was able to not only keep with Kluber, but out pitch him.   The Sox were holding a 2-1 lead heading into the 9th inning, but then the Sox put the game to bed when they scored 4 runs in the top of the inning.   The Sox took a 2-1 lead in the series and will look for the series win tomorrow.   The Yankees won as well, so the Sox were able to maintain their 4.5 game lead in the AL East.

The game stayed scoreless until the 4th inning when Mitch Moreland put the Sox on the board with a solo home run off of Kluber.   Sox 1-0.   Pomeranz kept the Indians scoreless, but had to throw a lot of pitching to do it.   He pitched into the 6th inning and still did not give up a run.   Pomeranz issued a lead off walk in the 6th and then got pulled with one out in favor of Joe Kelly.   Kelly got the two outs in the inning to close the book on Drew’s performance.   Pomeranz’s pitching line for the night was 103 pitches, 5.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 4 BB and 9 Ks.

Joe Kelly came back out for the 7th inning and got two outs before handing the ball over to Addison Reed.  Reed got the final out of the 7th to maintain the 1-0 lead.   The Sox got a much needed insurance run in the top of the 8th when Betts hit an RBI single to score Holt.   Sox 2-0.   The reason it was much needed was because Addison Reed would end up giving up a solo home run to Encarnacion in the bottom of the 8th.   Sox 2-1.   I’m sure no one was more appreciative of that insurance run than Drew Pomeranz, as it protected his win.   The Sox bats would also get working again in the top of the 9th to make sure that the Sox and Pomeranz would get this win.   Devers scored on a wild pitch, Holt hit an RBI double and then Nunez hit a 2 run homer to put the Sox up 6-1.   Kimbrel had already been warming, so he came into the game for the 9th even though it was no longer a save situation.   Kimbrel issued a single walk, but K’ed the other 3 batters to get the easy win.

Red Sox 6   Indians 1  BOXSCORE

WP: Pomeranz (13-4)  LP: Kluber (12-4)
