The Red Sox were facing off against the Yankees this weekend while the Sox are chasing the AL East title and the Yankees are chasing a spot for the wild card. The Sox had John Lackey on the mound vs. Hiroki Kuroda for the Yanks. The Sox went out to an early lead, but the game got tied before Lackey could get a win and the Sox had to win it big in the late innings.
The Sox got to scoring and often in the first inning. The Sox scored 4 runs in the 1st when Carp hit an RBI sac fly, Nava hit an RBI single and Drew hit a 2 run RBI double. Sox 4-0. That is how you start a game! Lackey gave up hit first run of the game in the 3rd inning when he gave up a solo HR to Brendan Ryan. Sox 4-1. Lackey kept the score 4-1 until the 6th inning when he gave up an RBI sac fly to Overbay. Sox 4-2. Lackey took the mound in the 7th, but was unable to finish the inning. With one out Lackey gave up back to back singles and was done for the night. Lackey was clearly not thrilled coming off the mound when Farrell came out to get him.
Craig Breslow came out in relief of Lackey in the 7th, but was unable to get the outs to have Lack in line for a win. Breslow gave up a game tying RBI double to Cano. Sox 4-4. Workman came into the game to get the final out of the inning, but the damage was done. The game didn't stayed tied for long though. The Sox had the bases loaded with one out when Salty came to the plate. Salty hit a grand slam to have the Sox leading 8-4. Tazawa came out and pitched a scoreless 8th before handing it off to Uehara in the 9th. It wasn't a save situation, but Koji still had his usual 1-2-3 innings to notch down the win. Uehara has now retired 36 batters in a row.
The magic number to clinch the AL East is now at 7.
