Here’s a rumor which makes absolutely no sense. The Blues have reportedly called the Ottawa Senators about goaltender Craig Anderson. The Sens have a wealth of goalies in Anderson, Andrew Hammond, Robin Lehner and Matt O’Connor waiting in the wings, so a trade involving a goalie makes a lot of sense. For the Blues … this is a puzzling rumor.
Via The Score:
Nobody is sure what the Sharks or Blues are offering in return but both have contracts with veteran forwards they’d like to move if they’re going to take on Anderson’s $4.2 million cap hit.
The Blues did shop forward T.J. Oshie and $4.175 million cap hit through 2016-17 at the March trade deadline while you have to think Sharks’ GM Doug Wilson will attempt to peddle the contracts of veterans Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau. We all know how that has worked out in the past.
Doug Armstrong has stated his desire to use Brian Elliott and Jake Allen next season, but that plan might be changing if this rumor is to be believed. Allen needs a new contract as he’s about to be a restricted free agent, but there’s no reason to believe the Blues won’t sign him to a new deal. There were some rumors suggesting Elliott may not be happy with the organization following the playoffs, but those reports were dismissed.
Why would the Blues want Anderson? He’s a solid goalie, but the Blues aren’t in a position where they need a goalie. The issue is with this team’s core and that doesn’t involve the men in the crease. If this report is factual and if the Blues actually believe their pressing need is in net, then this whole organization is upside down and backwards.
