This week's FanFriday is entitled "The Little Things" because it's subject is a great example of how doing all the little things make you as a teammate better, thus improving the whole team.
Last week, a gentleman named Brian posted on the RedsArmy Facebook page. He mentioned how big a Celtics fan he was, and how his nephew, also a big C's fan/RedsArmy reader, had just received an award. Brian's nephew, Joseph Settineri, was awarded the "Sportsman of the Year" award by the Salem, New Hampshire youth basketball league. Joseph received the award for service to his New Hampshire community, sportsmanship, contributions to his team, and for what his Uncle Brian called "just being an all-around good person."
The main reason I think it's so important to recognize Joseph is because team contribution is a staple of Celtics basketball, and being a Celtic. This team, especially the group of guys that have been around the last few seasons, are all about team. You hear it at practice, postgame, on the bench, they want to win as a team, and reach a common goal: a championship. No one cares about stats, Sportscenter highlights or any other individual accolades.
Joseph will be going to his first Celtics game of the season on March 23rd. Rajon Rondo, Joe's favorite player, and the rest of the C's will be taking on the Grizzlies. So when you walk into the TD Garden that evening Joseph, be sure and look at all those white banners hanging in the rafters.That's what being a team player gets you. Those 17 titles come from each team member contributing what they can individually. Congratulations on your award Joseph, and I hope the Celtics bring you a win on the 23rd.
