Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald has an interesting piece in his column about the Red Sox use of a 3-D doppler radar system:
The system uses an off-shoot of missile-tracking technology, and it has been installed a Fenway Park], the Sox’ minor league stadiums, and many other ballparks.
Data includes the downward plane of the pitched ball, how quickly a curveball is spinning (measured in revolutions per minute) and the extension the pitcher is getting (how close his release point is to home plate) when he throws the ball.
The system is made by the Danish company Trackman. The company specializes in software used to analyze golf swings and the flight of golf balls.
