Rays Pitching Does Sox Bats In

I am pretty sure the Red Sox are never gonna win another game ever again…or something equally as dramatic.  Last night we faced another good Rays pitcher in Wade Davis and much like many of his counterparts, he pitched a complete game win against us.

Lackey took the mound for the Sox and I hoped to see a great performance out of him.  Unfortunately, he struggled and then injury took him out of the game.  Lackey gave up a 3 run HR in the bottom of the 2nd inning to John Jaso.  Lackey gave up 2 more runs in the 3rd inning by giving up back to back RBI singles to Damon and Joyce.  Lackey got the last out of the 3rd, however he got hit with a linebacker to his calf and was out of the game.  I’m not sure if it was the leg injury or the giving up 3 runs which chased him from the game.

Scott Atchison who was just called up from Pawtucket replaced Lackey on the mound in the 4th.  Atchison pitched 2.2 innings of relief.  Atchison pitch scoreless innings in the 4th and 5th.  In the 6th inning, the Sox bats were able to get a little bit of action against Wade.  Reddick hit a single to start the inning and then was followed by a double by Saltalamacchia.  Ellsbury hit an RBI single to score Reddick.  Scutaro hit a sac fly to score Saltalamacchia.  Sox had two runs and maybe were showing some signs of life.

That is all the Sox bats would get that inning and unfortunately, the Sox pitching would give those runs right back to the Rays.  Atchy gave up two doubles to start the inning and the score was 6-2 Rays.  Atchison got two outs and then gave up a ground rule RBI double to Evan Longoria to have the Rays leading 7-2.  Felix Doubront replaced Atchison and got the 3rd out of the inning.  Doubront went on to pitch a scoreless 7th inning as well.  Franklin Morales pitched a scoreless 8th inning and that was it for the Sox.

Once again, the Sox bats were spelled by the Rays starting pitching.  I think this is the 3rd time that one of their pitchers has pitched a complete game against us.  By the Rays beating us last night, they are now 5.5 games behind us in the wild card race.  The only good thing is that the Yankees lost again last night, so we are still sitting 2.5 games behind them for the lead in the AL East.  What is frustrating is that with the Yankees losing 3 games in a row, we could have been making up ground on them instead of just sitting stagnant.
