Random Bills thoughts for 8/16

—Noooooooooo, not Aaron Maybin. Yeah, in a move that we could have seen from a mile away, Maybin is gone. In my opinion, he was the worst draft pick in team history. He did nothing for us! Zip, zilch, nada. At least Mike Williams started and wasn’t terrible all the time. Erik Flowers at least got a sack for his career. Tom Cousineau got us Jim Kelly in the long run. Yes, Maybin was by far the worst draft pick the Bills ever made. Hell, you could go beyond the Bills franchise and say of all time! Just a terrible pick that should really keep Dick Jauron out of football.

—So, what fear does Maybin put in us? You know? Some fans don’t want QBs from California starting here. (See: Johnson, Losman and Edwards.) Others can’t bear the thought of having an offensive lineman from Texas (see: Mike Williams) or any other player from the Longhorns. So, what is it with Maybin? We don’t want guys with bad haircuts? Nah. We don’t want guys who are from Penn State? Nah, Shane Conlan’s status as a Penn State Nittany Lion along with Jim Kelly being a Pennsylvania native have really set that area up. I’d have to say we should stay away from one year wonders or defensive ends that look small. Remember how many (stupid) fans tried saying that Von Miller might be the next Maybin because of his size? Yup, that’s the fear he will leave us.

—I can’t believe that Buddy Nix said that Maybin may fit a scheme as a safety because of his weight. I actually thought that they should have tried him at tight end. I mean, they don’t really need any safeties.

—I know this is something that fans might not want to hear, but I wouldn’t be shocked if the Bills picked a wide receiver in the draft next year….as in the 1st round. Remember, Roscoe Parrish and Stevie Johnson are free agents after this year. I know there’s a better chance that the team re-signs Roscoe with Evans gone, but he’s still up there in age. However, even if they do, do you really believe any of these wideouts are 2nd options? Also, if you look at how much money Johnson could get next year (maybe 8-10 million a year), the Bills could easily save money on drafting a wideout. Marcell Dareus only cost 25 million bucks and he was the 3rd pick in the draft. It’s just worth a mention when it comes to money and the size of rookie deals. I know it sounds crazy, but this is still the same team that drafted CJ Spiller when they had two backs on the squad.

—CJ Spiller needs to be the man this year. Yes, I’ve said that before, but it means much more now than the 20 or 30 times I’ve previously said it. With Evans gone, he needs to be the key in the passing game for the Bills. I’m not sure how much faith I have in Parrish, Jones or Nelson as being the 2nd option. Spiller needs to be Reggie Bush (early years) or Brian Westbrook. I don’t think it’s too much to ask for when you consider we were sold a bill of goods on a player who can be versatile in the running or passing game. Bottom line: He has more talent than our 2-7 wideouts.

—I’m not ready to bury Tyler Thigpen yet. Again, it’s just one preseason game and he knows Gailey’s offense inside and out. I still can’t believe he makes more money than Fitzpatrick.

—This has nothing to do with Kraig Urbik’s performance on Saturday, but why isn’t Geoff Hangartner being given the opportunity to start at guard? I mean, he was our starting center for the last two years. It’s not like he’s switching from center to tackle. As for Urbik, I didn’t even know he was penciled in as the starter until Matt Warren from Rumblings told me during our podcast weeks ago. I don’t even remember him playing last year!  I don’t know, it seems odd. Plus, he’s making 2.5 million a year. Hmmm…That sounds like a lot to pay for someone who’s a back-up. I say that because it’s worth noting when going through rosters. Read into it what you will.
