MLB.tv is causing headaches for fans where it should be providing entertainment. Here’s a West Coast Sox fan (@wiffleballhero) sharing their experience:
If baseball is life, then MLB.TV has been anything but a lifesaver to me. I recently moved away from Boston, but found solace in the idea that I could still be with the Red Sox day in and day out with the (hefty) purchase of an MLB.TV subscription. Solace has turned into uncontainable frustration (I havent broken anything yet, but it’s been touch and go). I splashed out on the premium subscription, but have not been able to see any games using the MLB.TV video player. Lately, I’ve been running MLB’s feed through a different player/client, but with it I am unable to reap the “MLB.TV premium” benefit of being able to watch several games at once- I also cant experience the regular benefits of MLB.TV, such as fantasy player tracking, the in-game twitter feed, the box score, etc. The G-Rated version of my current state is that I am VERY ticked off. I spent $100+ for THIS? Unfortunately, the alternatives are few and far between (and even more pricey). MLB.TV has made beautiful promises, has taken my money, and has yet to deliver. Wouldn’t you feel robbed, too?
Then there are the people who bought a Roku player with the promise of watching MLB games on their TVs. The MLB application for the Roku player will not start working until the end of the month even though mlb.com says you can watch every game! The Roku website has been updated to say coming mid-April but that was not the case before the season started. Most of the problems seemed to be caused by a plugin called Nex-Def which freezes on Windows Vista and Windows 7 computers.
After years of watching Red Sox games on MLB Exta Innings on Directv and cable, I too decided to give MLB.TV a try. I cannot say that I am happy with my choice. On opening day I was able to watch some choppy video before I got a blank screen with the MLB logo halfway through the game. The next day I had the same problem and went to the help forum to find I was not alone. I finally got a picture after several tries last night but it froze four times during the game and needed to be restarted. I understand computers and can simply say this product just has too many bugs. MLB.com should get the people who ran CBS’s online streaming coverage of March Madness or the same software Netflix uses to stream movies online, both of which work flawlessly on my computer.
