Because they have, as closer Jason Grilli put it, the ability to "look for the smell of blood and go in for the kill," the Pittsburgh Pirates bullpen has taken to calling itself, naturally, the "Shark Tank".
Naturally, if you're going to give yourself such a moniker, it makes sense that you, well, install a shark tank in your clubhouse, right?
Exactly.
But what do you stock it with?
Grilli and the boys were hoping to find some finned friends that can be kept as pets without "putting guys on the DL and losing a finger or an arm." What did they end up with? A black-and-white-dotted Coral Cat shark, a yellow-striped Banded Cat shark, and a puffer fish, so far.
And according to Grilli, several more "predatory creatures" are on the way. "You put some live crab, shrimp, or octopus in there and they go nuts," the closer said.
The 150-gallon tank (complete with pirate-themed decor) was donated and customized by Gary Knabe, a Pirates season-ticket holder who owns Elmer's Aquarium and Pet Center in Monroeville, Pennsylvania.
