With last night’s loss, the Red Sox have lost their 3rd series in a row. Andrew Miller took the mound for the Sox and hoped to show us that his last start was the exception and not the rule. Instead, he might have shown us the opposite.
Miller put the Sox in a hole in the 2nd inning when he gave up 4 runs. He gave up an RBI single to David Cooper. He then gave up a 3 run HR to J.P. Arencibia. Miller gave up another run in the 3rd when he gave up a solo HR to Encarnacion. Sox trail 0-5.
At the same time Ricky Romero was just dominating the Sox lineup. The Sox weren’t able to get anyone to cross the plate until the 7th inning. Tek started the inning by getting a walk. With 2 outs, DMac hit a single and was followed by an RBI double from Ellsbury. Sox scored a run, so at least we had that. Romero was pulled from the game with runners on 2nd and 3rd. Scoot came to the plate and continued his amazing series against his former team. Scoot hit a single to score Tek and Ellsbury. Sox trail 3-5.
Michael Bowden came to the mound in relief of Miller after 5 innings. While Miller struggled and gave up 5 runs, I’ll also give him credit for settling down and staying in the game for 5 innings. In the 3rd, I didn’t think he was long for the game. Miller’s pitching line was 5 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 2 BBs and 3 Ks. Bowden pitched a 1-2-3 6th inning. In the 7th just as the Sox bats were putting up a little fight, Bowden gave up a solo HR to Thames. Sox trail 3-6. Bowden was pulled and replaced by Felix Doubront. Doubront gave up a run in the 8th with an RBI double to Cooper. Sox trail 3-7. In the 9th the Sox would add one more run when Jason Varitek hit his 11th HR of the season. However, the Sox wouldn’t get anything else going so they lost 4-7.
And now we head down to Tampa. Let’s hope our slumping, shuffling Sox can get things together.
