Lester Wins, DMac Homers as Sox Take Series

Jon Lester took the mound on Sunday afternoon without Kevin Youkilis, David Ortiz and Jacoby Ellsbury.  Even if Lester pitched like gang busters, where was the Sox offense gonna come from?  AGonz?  Pedey? Who would be the guys to help bring Lester to a win? Not exactly who’d ya think!

Jon Lester did pitch quite well.  Lester gave up some walks along the way, but he didn’t give up a hit until the 4th inning.  The Sox bats gave Lester a single run in the 5th inning when Jason Varitek hit an RBI TRIPLE to plate Jed Lowrie.  In the 6th, Darnell McDonald hit a solo HR to put the Sox up 2-0.  That is DMac’s 6th HR of the season and he’s on a 3 game hit streak.  It’s nice to see him being productive when so many of our big bats are out of the lineup.  In the 7th inning, Carl Crawford hit his 8th homerun of the season to give the Sox a 3-0 lead.

Lester seemed to find some trouble in the 7th.  He gave up a leadoff triple to Giavotella and then an RBI single to Moustakas to get the Royals on the board.  Lester was pulled and Dan Bard was once again in the game in a high pressure situation.  Dan Bard did what Dan Bard does and got the outs he needed to.  The Sox bats gave Bard some breathing room in the 8th by scoring some more runs.  Scutaro started the inning with a double, followed by a single by DMac and then Gonzo hit an RBI single to plate Scoots.   Lowrie hit an RBI sac fly to plate DMac, followed by an RBI double from the new kiddo, Ryan Lavarnway.  Sox lead 6-1.  Bard pitched another scoreless inning in the bottom of the 8th and was followed by Dan Wheeler pitching another scoreless inning of his own to close out the game.
