The Red Sox have clinched the postseason and the AL East, but they are still in the hunt to have the best record in the AL to be able to play the wild card team and have home field advantage. The Sox still need to have their foot on the gas heading into the playoffs. The Sox are playing a 2 game NL series with the Rockies and had John Lackey on the mound. In a rare instance, Lackey didn't look dominate and gave up 3 homers in his outing.
Lackey didn't start the game very well, giving up a homer to the first batter he faced. Lackey gave up a homer to Blackmon and then an RBI single to Helton. Sox 0-2. Not a great way to start the game. In the 3rd Lackey gave up another solo HR, this time to Tulowitzki. Sox 0-3. Lackey gave up his 3rd HR of the night in the 4th with a solo HR to Dickerson. Sox 0-4. At the same time the Sox bats didn't seem to be having any luck against the Rockies starter Tyler Chatwood. The Sox weren't able to crack the scoreboard until the 7th inning and that was more due to just luck. Middlebrooks hit a double and then Jackie Bradley Jr hit what looked like it would be the 3rd out, but by a throwing error he was safe and Middlebrooks trucked on home. Bradley ended up getting to 3rd on another throwing error. The inning ended when Bradley was thrown out at home when the we tried to score on a passed ball. Sox 1-4. Lackey was done after 7 innings and looked like he would be in line for his 13th loss of the season.
Drake Britton took the mound in the 7th and this is the inning that the game went from bad to worse. Britton gave up a leadoff double and was out of the game. Brandon Workman came into the game and he didn't do any better during his outing. Workman gave up a single and a walk to have the bases loaded with no outs. Workman then gave up a 2 run RBI single to have the Rockies leading 6-1. Workman finally recorded an out in the inning, but then he followed it by allowing a 2 run RBI single to Cuddyer. Sox 1-8. Workman was out of the game and Franklin Morales was in. Morales was able to get the final two outs and get out of the inning. Rubby De La Rosa came out and pitched a scoreless 8th inning and we were on to the 9th. The Sox didn't have a huge rally in them, but they were able to grab a couple of runs when Salty hit a 2 run HR. Sox 3-8.
Thankfully the A's also lost last night, so the Sox are still clinging to a 1 game lead in the race for the best record in the AL.
Red Sox 3 Rockies 8 BOXSCORE
WP: Chatwood (8-5) LP: Lackey (10-13)
