In a polarizing announcement, the St. Louis Blues are bringing back head coach Ken Hitchcock for one more season. Hitchcock’s status has been unknown ever since the Blues bowed out in the first round against the Minnesota Wild. The team was linked to Mike Babcock, but ultimately the Blues have decided to give Hitchcock one more year to get the organization its first Stanley Cup.
It’s widely known the Blues have a core filled with question marks. The head coach position was one of those questions as well, but now the Blues have made it clear they believe Hitchcock isn’t the problem. That’s a fair assessment as fans have seen the same core group of players run several coaches out of town and still haven’t made a deep run in the playoffs.
The decision to retain Hitchcock will be met with scrutiny, but fans should wait to see what other moves (if any) the Blues make this summer before passing judgement. The only strategy that deserves an “incorrect” label would be if the Blues brought back the coach and all of their players. That’d be the definition of insanity as the Blues have tried that formula and failed multiple times. If the Blues move some key pieces and begin to shift their identity, the Hitchcock decision makes more sense.
