After fifteen years behind the dish in Boston, it’s hard to imagine Jason Varitek in a uniform that doesn’t say “Red Sox” across the chest. But it might happen.
And he might be heading back to where it all started.
Wait…say what?
Jason Varitek has, in fact, interviewed for Mariners’ managerial job, multiple major-league sources confirm. @JonHeymanCBS first. #RedSox

If Varitek doesn’t get Seattle job, I’m told he would stay with #RedSox in the special assistant to GM role he has held for past few years

In 1994, Varitek was drafted in the first round by the Seattle Mariners. Three years later, he was dealt to Boston alongside Derek Lowe for Heathcliff Slocumb. Tuesday, it was revealed, that the longtime catcher interviewed for the Mariners vacant managerial gig…even though he has absolutely no coaching experience.
But that’s not to say he hasn’t been around baseball.
Since his retirement in 2011, Varitek has been working in Boston’s front office, serving as a special assistant to the team’s former general manager Ben Cherington. Should the 43-year-old not hear his name called as Seattle’s new skipper, he’s likely to stay in BeanTown working for current GM Mike Hazen.
