Kevin Shattenkirk has missed the past several weeks with an “abdominal” injury he suffered back at the beginning of February while skating against the Washington Capitals. Details on Shattenkirk’s injury have been vague, but the team did release the fact that Shattenkirk needed surgery to repair his ailment.
Now that Shattenkirk is closing in on a return, the details of his injury have surfaced. Horrifying, cringe-worthy details.
Via STLToday:
“I just felt a pop and instant pain in my belly and in my groin. I knew right away something was really bad. I’ve had little tweaks before, but this one felt instantly like something was wrong.”
An MRI showed that Shattenkirk had a torn groin on the right side and torn abdominal muscles on both sides.
“I didn’t really know what to expect, what it could have been,” Shattenkirk said. “It was essentially torn off the bone at both spots on the right side and then on the left side in the ab as well. It was pretty amazing to know that that little play caused so much damage.”
Good. Grief. Those details are painful to read, let alone experience.
It’s great to see Shattenkirk closing in on a return to the team, but you have to hope he’s fully healed after hearing about his injury.
