We live in a world of fantasy … … … sports!
The end of August is traditionally considered to be fantasy football draft time around the country. It seems as though the concept of fantasy football has taken the sports world by storm. Sitting in my office on a Monday I hear people talking about their fantasy team as much, if not more so, than how their favorite team did the day before.
Other sports have taken the hint and sports sites like ESPN and Yahoo Sports have created fantasy games for other sports like basketball, baseball, hockey, NASCAR, golf and, well, really any sport you could think of.
So…why not fantasy wrestling?
WWE toyed with the idea of a fantasy game on their website a few years ago. I didn’t sign up for it myself but judging by how long the game lasted, I’m assuming it wasn’t that much of a hit. Fantasy sports as a whole was still in its infancy at that point though. Perhaps WWE’s attempt at entering the fantasy sports world was just a bit ahead of its time.
That’s what six friends and I are out to find out! We have recently created our own Fantasy WWE League. Here are the major bullet-points …
- All superstars/divas of WWE and NXT that are listed on the WWE website are eligible (i.e. James Storm was not listed on the website therefore he was not eligible to be selected)
- Simple points scale for participating in/winning matches on Raw/Smackdown – larger point scale for pay-per-views and smaller point scale for NXT shows.
- Bonus points for being in main events, title wins and title defenses.
- Four seasons in a year ending with each of the four major pay-per-views (Royal Rumble, WrestleMania, SummerSlam, Survivor Series) – Free agents can be picked up after each season, player with lowest points gets first pick.
- “Starting” rosters are comprised of 7 Superstars and 1 Diva along with 1 Superstar and 1 Diva “on the bench” (can be used as a replacement for an injured starter – 2 “non-injury” starter replacements are allowed in a season)
So all that’s left are the rosters! Draft order was done randomly. Here is how the rosters look. To give you an idea on how the draft played out, the rosters are show in draft order with a serpentine draft.
