ESPN Ready to Start Championship Week

One of the best weeks of the year is Championship Week when the college basketball conference tournaments take the sports calendar by the balls and offer great upsets, buzzer beaters and tremendous games. This is something ESPN does extremely well every year. Championship Week seems to get bigger and 2010 is no exception.

Let’s take a look at the schedule and it’s quite long. Be ready to scroll.

Championship Week Begins Thursday, March 4
Record 177 Games Across ESPN Networks; 174 Games on ESPN360.com; New Elements: ABC Broadcasts SEC Semifinals and Championship; Record Number of High-Definition Games; ESPN360.com to Simulcast Every ESPNU Game as well as ESPN and ESPN2; and Record Number of Women’s Conference Tournament Games

This year’s Championship Week will include a network record 177 men’s and women’s college basketball conference tournament games from March 4 to March 14 across ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN360.com, ESPN FULL COURT, ESPN Mobile TV, ESPN Radio and ESPN International. It will surpass the previous high of 152 telecasts, set last year. New elements:
  • ABC will offer full national coverage of the men’s SEC Championship semifinals (Saturday, March 13, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. ET) and championship (Sunday, March 14, at 1 p.m.). Some reactions. Dan Shulman will call the ACC Championship with Dick Vitale ending a long pairing with Mike Patrick. In addition, Sean McDonough gets to call the Big East Championship with his entertaining team of Bill Raftery and Jay Bilas. And the SEC Championship goes from CBS to ABC. Bad job by ESPN putting Brent Musburger and Bob Knight on the Big 12 Tournament over Ron Franklin and Fran Fraschilla.
