In just his fourth year in the Majors (has it already been four years?), Bryce Harper has finally started living up to the potential…hitting .330 with 42 home runs and 99 RBI.
And he did it all before turning 23.
When the Washington Nationals outfielder, who was born Octohber 23, 1992, wins the National League MVP award Thursday night, he’ll become just the fourth youngest all-time to take home the award. The only three men who were younger than Harper when he took home the award…Stan Musial (in 1943), Johnny Bench (1970) and Vida Blue (1971).
All that aside, here are eight things which are (surprisingly) older than Harper.
LOUIS TOMLINSON
- The One Direction crooner was born December 24, 1991. I’m told he’s a big deal.
MALL OF AMERICA
- The crown jewel of American commerce opened its doors August 11, 1992. Fun fact. A plaque embedded in the floor of Nickelodeon Universe marks the exact spot of home plate at Metropolitan Stadium…home to the Minnesota Twins from 1961 to 1981.
UNDER SEIGE
- The Steven Seagal action movie opened on just over two thousand screens on October 9, 1992. It would stay atop the box office charts for four weeks…including the weekend Bryce Harper was born.
THE FALL OF THE BERLIN WALL
- The 96.3 mile wall that divided Germany for nearly 30 years started being demolished in the summer of 1990. It would not be completely torn down until later in 1992.
CRYSTAL PEPSI
- Even though they didn’t begin a nationwide campaign until SuperBowl XXVII in January, 1993…PepsiCo launched the clear soda April 12, 1992. It would be pulled from shelves by Fall 1993 due to its awful sales.
OLYMPIC DREAM TEAM
- Led by Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Magic Johnson, the 1992 Olympic Dream Team played their first game in Barcelona as a unit in July and brought home Olympic gold shortly after steamrolling the competition by an average of 44 points a game.
SAN JOSE SHARKS
- The Sharks brought hockey back to northern California and introduced teal to surburban white kids when the team started play in October 1991.
TOTALLY KROSSED OUT
- Released on March 31, 1992, the debut album by Kriss Kross will (for some reason) make you jump, jump.
