This game started with Clay still looking like he might have some rust hanging around. He gave up a solo HR to Bobby Abreu in the 1st inning. In the second inning, Clay loaded the bases with no outs. Suddenly, the talks of Clay lack of confidence came rushing back. Clay showed them and left the bases loaded. Clay never looked back. He retired 11 Angels in order and had 7 strike outs through 7 innings. VMart was back in the lineup and immediately became productive with an RBI double in 2nd, bringing Beltre home. Papi followed it up with a solo HR. Papi loves hitting bombs at Anaheim and hit another 2 run HR in the 8th to put the Sox up 4-1. Atchy came in for the 8th inning, got 2 quick outs and then gave up a 2 run HR to Hideki Matsui. The game suddenly got real tight with the Sox leading 4-3 and Tito called on the closer, Jonathan Papelbon to get a 4 out save. Pap came out and got the final out of the 8th inning. The Sox rallied again in the 9th inning and JD Drew put 2 more runs on the board with a double (which I still believe if it was reviewed was actually a HR). JD was then thrown out at the plate (on a play that was later shown that he was CLEARLY safe). Sox lead 6-3. All that JD Drew drama didn’t matter in the end, Pap came in and finished out the 9th inning, given up one hit in the process.
Overall, a good good game. Clay pitched like the baby ace that he is. VMart was back and helping the ball club. Papi was homering all over the place. And Pap came in, pitched up a storm and saved the game.
SOX WIN 6-3. BOXSCORE
