Clay Buchholz comes up HUGE in Sox win!

I was at the game at Fenway today.  I watched the weather report before leaving for the park…and saw that there was going to be scattered showers through much of the day.  I headed to the park and the skies looked bright.  Clay Buchholz was taking the mound for the Sox and hoping to be the guy to right the ship.  The Sox got on the board early with a little small ball.  Ellsbury and Pedroia got a double steal and Jed Lowrie knocked in Ellsbury with a single in the bottom of the 1st.

The drama of the day was the rain.  At the beginning of the 3rd inning as the Sox were taking the field…the rain intensified and thunder and lightening joined the show.  The tarp was pulled and we were in a rain delay.  We were in delay for close to 2 hours.  Everyone assumed with that much time that Buchholz would be done for the day.  Much to my surprise when the tarp was pulled and the Sox took the mound again, Clay was right there.  He pitched 3 more scoreless innings.  It absolutely amazing that he was able to pitch 5 full innings after such a long delay.  He truly was taking one for the team, especially since we used both of our long relief guys in the bullpen yesterday.

Youkilis added an RBI in the 2nd and then Clay turned the game over to the relief pitchers.  The bullpen pitched 4 innings of scoreless relief: Rich Hill, Matt Albers, Daniel Bard and Jonathan Papelbon.  The Sox got 2 more insurance runs from Jacoby Ellsbury in the bottom of the 8th inning.

All in all…..a wet, rainy, GREAT game.  I can’t say enough how impressed I am with what Clay Buchholz did today.  I don’t know many pitchers who would have even considered heading back to the mound.  He did what the team needed from him…and in some of the worst conditions.
