Cardinals Make It Up To Andrea Karl

Andrea Karl is a PHD candidate in the molecular genetics and genomics program at Washington University.

She also enjoys running and finished the GO! STL Marathon on April 12th in 2 hours, 54 minutes and 28 seconds, good enough for second place.

Until it was discovered that the woman who beat her across the line didn’t actually, you know, run the race.

Ms. Karl was a much better sport about the situation than you or I would have been. If I’m putting in 26.2 miles of work in less than 3 hours… there better be some tape to break.

Luckily, the Cardinals stepped in after this story became a thing and gave Ms. Karl the finish she deserves Sunday evening before Adam Wainwright thrashed the Reds in 2 hours and 2 minutes:

She collected her $1,500 winners check and got to throw out the first pitch as well. Not a bad ending for everyone involved.

Now she can go back to her daily routine of making the rest of us feel like jumbo slackers.

In a related note, this Deadspin piece on the ‘photo that changed the Boston Marathon forever’ is worth the read.
