-What the hell is taking the Bills so long to find assistant coaches? Look, I know that the Bills just hired their coach five days ago, but it’s not like they are fighting against other teams for assistants. There has only been two other job openings this offseason, both of them filled weeks ago, so it shouldn’t be an issue. They are also playing with fire by not having their coaching staff in place for the Senior Bowl. Hell, even Tom Cable is going to cover the bowl and he may be canned by halftime of the game. If Buddy Nix’s forte is all about drafting, shouldn’t you want a coaching staff in place to view prospects? If this is a sign at how slow this new regime is at filling spots, then look for them to hire John Guy’s replacement by July. As usual, the Bills are behind the 8 ball-
-I’ve been big on trying to find a defensive coordinator whose either been a former head coach or an established coordinator. However, with NFL coaches not losing as many jobs this season than years past, means that you can’t promote fired coaches as your coordinators. With that being said, I’m not exactly thrilled with what’s out there. What? You’re going to bring in Jim Bates? Sorry, but his last three coaching stops in Green Bay, Denver and Tampa Bay were disastrous. Jim Mora, Jr.? Eh, don’t really think his defenses cut it in San Fran or Seattle as a coordinator. Gunther Cunnigham? Sorry, but I don’t want a coordinator near my team that Trent Edwards scored four touchdowns against.
So what should the Bills do then? They should look at the top defenses in the NFL and promote their linebacker or secondary coaches to coordinator. I’ve been a big fan of the Jets defense. I love how they just blitz the crap out of the opponent and live be that philosophy. Sorry, but I’m over the whole “bend but don’t break defense” of the Bills. If I’m the Bills, I look at the Jets defensive coaching staff and see who they could steal from there.
