The 2015-16 season is still in its infancy, but the St. Louis Blues are already being challenged to overcome adversity. Robby Fabbri went down with a concussion in just his second career NHL games. Kevin Shattenkirk suffered a lower-body injury and will likely miss a couple games. In a division/conference in which every point is extremely valuable, the Blues’ depth is being tested early.
The name of the game in the NHL is depth. Teams need scoring on all four lines. Teams need players in reserve who can come in when there’s an injury and immediately make an impact without missing a beat. Most teams believe they’ve secured an adequate amount of depth prior to the season, but that’s put to the test as soon as the first puck drops.
The Blues in particular are having their depth tested early. Fabbri’s injury has brought Scottie Upshall to the mix and may result in playing time for Scott Gomez. Shattenkirk’s injury, which thankfully doesn’t sound severe, places more pressure on the rookies – Colton Parayko and Joel Edmundson – as well as Robert Bortuzzo. Things could certainly be worse, but it’s noteworthy that a second-line forward and arguably the best offensive defenseman will miss time.
At this stage, the Blues have to be pleased with how their depth is fairing. More severe tests will take place over the season, but the early returns on the young skaters and the vets have been positive.
