When the Blues were booted out of the playoffs in Game 6 against the Minnesota Wild, a lot of fans wondered if it was the last time they’d see Barret Jackman on the roster. Jackman has skated with the Blues since he made his NHL debut in 2001-02, but more and more questions are being asked of the defenseman as he enters the twilight of his career and prepares to be an unrestricted free agent.
Does Jackman have any gas left in the tank? Does he want to keep skating with the Blues?
Previously, Jackman stated he has four or five years left before he hangs up his skates, dismissing the retirement rumors. He believes he still has the skill left to compete at a high level with the Blues.
Via STLToday.com:
“I’m not going to sit here and toot my own horn, but I felt I played well. I don’t think my play’s dropped off year after year. I still feel like I help the team.”
And he wants to retire in St. Louis.
“That’s something that Army’s going to sit down and see if I fit in the organization still,” he said. “(But) I’d love to be back and be a Blue for my entire career.”
Jackman’s play appeared to drop off some in 2014-15, but it’d be overly harsh to say he was bad or a liability. You could make a strong case that his skill on the ice could be replaced, but there’s really no telling what the Blues might miss if Jackman’s leadership and experience on and off the ice aren’t retained for next season.
