Head coach Andy Reid tried several times to trade for traded for Quarterback Alex Smith.

He told the media this back in 2013 when he finally landed for the former 49ers QB:

“I’d always kind of had my eye on Alex, as [GM John] Dorsey did, and we were able to get that thing done,” Reid said.

At the time, Alex was coming off one of his best seasons in the NFL. The 49ers were a Super Bowl contender and Smith, was one of the winningest QBs from 2011-2012. But then a concussion against St. Louis ended his 49ers career, and the most likely destination seemed to be the Kansas City Chiefs, which have been known to pickup former 49er QBs (DeBerg, Montana, Bono, and Grbac).

In landing Alex Smith, the Chiefs and Andy Reid, finally had their man under center. Now in his third season with Kansas City, Smith and the Chiefs are rolling right into the playoffs for the second time in three seasons.

After a 1-5 start, the Chiefs have pulled off nine straight wins, and during that span, Alex Smith has fired 12 touchdown passes and run for two more, while throwing just a pair of interceptions.

This is the Alex Smith that Andy Reid envisioned coaching, and this is the Alex Smith he’s got now leading his football team into the playoffs.
