Deep breath, everyone.
In. Out. In. Out.
We good?
Adam Wainwright has left spring training in Jupiter to come back to St. Louis and get his ongoing abdominal pain examined, reports Derrick Goold.
Apparently this doesn’t effect his throwing, just his working out. The team hopes to know Thursday just how much time Wainwright will need to be sidelined. His arm, which he had surgery on in the off-season, appears to be fine.
Now if you’re an optimist, you stop reading here. Thanks for coming by, we’ll catch you around the way.
You still want more, eh?
A few things that aren’t all that applicable, but are kind of applicable…
- Kevin Shattenkirk last played a full game on Jan 30th. He also had a “ab injury”.
- The core is important to everything, pitching or not.
- A sports hernia takes 3-6 weeks of recovery.
Again, not a ton is known about Wain-O’s specific injury. And yes, baseball is different than hockey. And yes, it’s not known if he has a hernia yet.
This could be caution embodied.
Or it could be the start of a protracted battle to get Wainwright ready for the season. Remember – even the best hurlers don’t just grab the pill and start winging – they need some runway to get ready.
Regardless of the severity of this, the Cardinals spring is off to a bumpy start. Let’s hope for a quick recovery and ultimately a start opening night in Wrigley.
