10/2 Recap: Santana’s 3 Run Double Crushes Red Sox, Naysayers

Player of the Game

Carlos Santana was the Indians offensive superstar tonight as his three run double gave the Indians an early lead that wouldn’t be surpassed. He also singled in his first at bat and walked twice later, adding two runs to his three RBI.

Feathers Up

The Indians had a big inning in the third and for once it didn’t involve Francisco Lindor. Mike Aviles hit an infield single to start the inning, then Jose Ramirez walked to move him to second. After Lindor struck out, Ryan Raburn singled to load the bases and Carlos Santana brought them all home. Santana crushed a ball off the wall in left, scoring all three then scored himself on a Chris Johnson single to right.

Like Trevor Bauer before him, Josh Tomlin finished out the season with a really nice start. He allowed just two runs on a David Ortiz two run home run, pitching 6.1 innings and striking out five to just two walks. Tomlin has had a positive outing in all but his last start as he reentered himself into the Indians starting rotation discussion.

Jeff Manship continued his relief dominance tonight, lowering his ERA to 0.93 with a scoreless 1.2 innings. He came in with runners on first and second, but was able to get two outs on one pitch with a double play. In the next inning, he struck out two and walked one. Kyle Crockett also threw a scoreless inning with a strike out in the ninth.

Milestone Alert: After hitting early on, Santana returned to his normal self later on, walking twice. This pushed him to 106 on the season tying him for tenth in Indians history with Les Fleming from 1942.

With the win, the Indians retain their hope of finishing the season with a winning record. Their record currently sits at 79-80 and they will have to win out to finish ahead of .500 with their 161 game schedule.

Feathers Down

The Indians had a solid scoring opportunity in the first after Lindor walked and stole second, but were not able to convert. Ryan Raburn walked as well to put to on, but Lindor was thrown out trying to score on a Carlos Santana single. Santana and Raburn moved up to second and third on the play, but were stranded there when Yan Gomes struck out to end the inning.

Final Score: Cleveland Indians 8 – Boston Red Sox 2
