MUST LISTEN: Ron Cey’s Lost Solo Career

bos

We’re more than halfway through Spring Training and there’s been nary a mention of an actor or musician trying their hand at the National Pastime.

That’s right…no Billy Crystals, no Kenny Chesneys and no Garth Brookses. Heck, there hasn’t even been a Chris Gaines sighting!

Lame reference? Allow me to digress and remind you that for every celebrity that wants to play baseball…there’s a baseball player who is dying to act or sing.

Which brings me to Ron Cey. You remember Ron Cey, right?

Well, forty years ago, the plucky, sometimes power-hitting third baseman who led the Los Angeles Dodgers to the 1981 World Series, stepped into a recording studio and the rest, as they say…was history.

“Well, it wasn’t really designed to be a hit,” Cey said of the single. “I think it may have sold thirty copies worldwide. It was really just kind of a keepsake that was done in fun. Anyone who took it more seriously than that missed the point!”

“Third Base Bag” wasn’t the only song “The Penguin” recorded. The 45 also featured the B-side “One Game at a Time”.

The record, which according to most accounts, didn’t get much airplay has since become a collector’s item and typically pops up on eBay from time to time.
