For the first time since Harry Truman was in the White House, Don Zimmer isn’t spending Spring Training in uniform.
The longtime player, coach, manager and, arguably, one of the more recognizable faces of the New York Yankees franchise during their historic run in the late-90s died last June after spending 66 years in baseball.
Saturday, the Tampa Bay Rays honored their former coach and adviser with a sign outside Charlotte Sports Park, their Spring Training home.
“We had the privilege of spending every spring so far in Port Charlotte with Don Zimmer. We miss him dearly, and we honor him with this pathway,” team president Matt Silverman said. “It’s the path that he used to drive his golf cart back and forth, and (we) thought it was a great way to honor him.”
