Bryce Harper has never been short of confidence. And on Wednesday, the 22-year-old channeled Joe Namath circa-1969.
“To be able to have a guy like [Max] Scherzer come in? I just started laughing. I was like, ‘Where’s my ring?’ You know what I mean? It’s stupid. It’s absolutely stupid how good our staff is,” the Washington Nationals outfielder said after hitting camp. “I’m going to bring back a title to D.C. no matter what. I’m getting chills just thinking about it. I absolutely want to do that for this city and I don’t care how long it takes me.”
Okay, okay, maybe Harper’s comments weren’t as monumental as the time “Broadway Joe” predicted his New York Jets would win Super Bowl III or when Muhammad Ali predicted he’d knock out Sonny Liston in the first round of their 1965 fight, but, still…predicting a championship?
Yikes.
Buy, hey, if it means Harper and the boys have a fire lit beneath them and want to show the world that they are more the team that led the National League in wins versus the team that lost to the eventual world champion San Franciso Giants 3-1 in the playoffs…I’m all for it.
