Vladimir Tarasenko won’t be leaving the Blues anytime soon. The star forward signed a massive eight-year, $60 million contract which will keep him in St. Louis through the 2022-23 campaign. Tarasenko’s new deal will carry an average cap hit of $7.5 million and he’ll become the team’s highest paid player, surpassing Paul Stastny.
A deal between the Blues and Tarasenko was always going to get done. Though the Blues have made some questionable decisions over the last few seasons, retaining an asset like Tarasenko is a no-brainer. He’s a game changer in every sense of the word and possesses a shot and scoring instinct the Blues have lacked for years.
The question wasn’t whether the Blues would reach a deal with Tarasenko, it was how long would the deal be and for how much money. The eight-year deal Tarasenko received is the maximum the Blues can give a player under the current collective bargaining agreement. It not only is a testament to Tarasenko’s skill, but it’s a testament to the organization that they recognize how important Tarasenko is in the future for this franchise.
