The Sox faced off against the Yankees and the media storm that surrounds Alex Rodriguez last night. Unfortunately the most damage the Sox were able to go against the Yanks was the reigning down of boos on ARod in each and every one of his at bats. Doubront struggled out of the gate and the Yanks rolled to an easy victory.
The Yanks got on the board quickly and well, often. The Yanks scored their first run in the 1st inning when Soriano reached on an infield single. Sox 0-1. ARod came to the plate next. He was greeted by as loud boos as I have ever heard at Fenway during each and every pitch of the at bats. The at bats turned to cheers when ARod grounded into an inning ending double play. The Yanks kept attacking the scoreboard though. In the 2nd they scored 2 runs when Doubront gave up a 2 run HR to new Yankee Mark Reynolds. Sox 0-3. In the 3rd the Yanks jumped out to a 6-0 lead when Doubront gave up a 3 run HR to Soriano. It was clearly was not Doubront's night. In the 4th inning Doubront gave up one more run when Cano hit an RBI single. Sox 0-7. Doubront was done after 4 innings and De La Rosa was in the game.
In the bottom of the 4th the Sox got on the scoreboard for the first time. Jonny Gomes hit an RBI single to score Pedroia. Sox 1-7. De La Rosa kept pitching into the 7th inning and he was able to keep the Yanks from continuing to pile on the scoreboard. With one out in the 7th, De La Rosa was done and Franklin Morales was in the game. Morales has been gone so long, I often forgot he existed. Morales quickly reminded us of who he was with his "almost a balk" pickoff move and got Soriano at first. In the bottom of the 7th the Sox were able to tack on a few more runs. Ortiz hit an RBI single to score Pedroia and then proceeded to be thrown out when he tried to leg it into an double. Then Salty hit an RBI single to score Drew. Sox 3-7. Morales pitched a scoreless 8th and then handed the ball over to Drake Britton in the 9th. Britton has been pretty impressive since being called up, but he sure wasn't last night. Britton ended up giving up 3 runs in the inning by way of an infield single to Ichiro and singles to Reynolds and Stewart. Sox 3-10. The game had nothing going for it. It had bad pitching, bad defense and basically non-existent hitting. All in all, not their best game all around.
