The O’s Nor the Rain Could Stop Brandon Workman

The Red Sox headed into the game last night hoping to overcome the O’s hard hitting lineup and the foreboding weather.  The Sox had rookie Brandon Workman on the mound vs. the O’s Opening Day starter Chris Tillman.  The game suffered two rain delays in the early innings, one lasting about 15 minutes and the second lasting well over an hour.  Workman had only thrown 12 pitches at that point and even with the long delay he came out and pitched himself a gem.  Workman kept the O’s off the board and got himself his first win of the season.

Workman pitched a scoreless 1st inning and then they went into their first rain delay.  After about 15 minutes game resumed and then before the 2nd inning could get in the books, the game was in delay once again.  Workman had barely gotten started and his start was in jeopardy.  Both starters were able to keep their arms loose and warm and came out after the long delay.  In the 3rd inning the Sox got on the scoreboard when Napoli hit an RBI single to score Brock Holt.  Sox 1-0.

That would end up being the only run that the Sox would need with how Workman was pitching.  Workman had a perfect game going until Nelson Cruz walked in the 5th inning and had a no hitter going until Flaherty got a single in the 6th.  Workman took the mound in the 7th inning and after 2 outs Farrell went out to get him.  Workman was dealing and had only thrown 67 pitches, but with the long delay Farrell wanted Andrew Miller to face Chris Davis.  Workman got a standing ovation from the Fenway South crowd at Camden Yards.  Miller did his job and struck out Davis.  Tazawa came out and pitched a scoreless 8th inning and then handed the ball over to Koji in the 9th.  Uehara gave up a leadoff single, but then got the next 3 batters in order to get the 1-0 win for the Sox.
